about

Ignacio Bustamante was a violinist from Buenos Aires Texalpan in the municipality of San Andrés Tuxtla, and one of the main exponents of the local use of hollowed out violins in the son jarocho tradition. It is does not have parallels in other son jarocho regions. He also plays guitarra de son. Both his father and his uncle were highly venerated jarocho violinists, sought after to play in the surrounding area. “Lo buscaban dondequiera y se lo llevaban por Ohuilapan y Miltepec,” says Don Ignacio. His father was a farmer, but whenever he had some wood, he would also make furniture and instruments—jaranas, guitarras, and violins. Don Ignacio learned instrument building from him. He began playing guitarra de son but one day decided to pick up the violin too. Don Ignacio has inspired a new generation of musicians who actively cultivate and promote the use of violin in son jarocho.

Recorded by Alec Dempster in Buenos Aires Texalpan.

El zapateado, el siquisirí, la morena, el Colás, and los enanos were released previously on 'Aquí estamos todavía', a compendium of recordings of violnists from Santiago Tuxtla and San Andrés Tuxtla, Veracruz.
